Tami ...

  • is losing my mind.
  • is home from work today with Lainey who has croup.
  • is surprisingly freaked out by the croup. I took care of kids in the hospital with croup, but it’s a little different when it’s your own child barking and gasping in the middle of the night.
  • wonders if we’re going to miss out on “date night?”
  • wishes I had a bottle of New Age wine to wash down these brownies.
  • can actually feel my butt getting bigger from the brownies.
  • is playing Lucky Ducks with Lainey and a stuffed cheetah.
  • wonders if Lent is over yet?

Does anyone know what that is? Those words up there, with the bullets? Those are my status updates people. Well, I probably wouldn’t have done all of them, I might have gotten carried away, that might be the withdrawal talking.

Let me preface this by saying I. Am. Not. Complaining. I’m just saying.

facebook-cartoon-dave-coverly

I gave up Facebook for Lent. I put a lot of thought into what I was going to “give up” since I’m usually not successful (see this post), so I really wanted to do good this year. And I am going to do good, heck, I’ve already made it two days.

I didn’t go into this thinking it would be easy. If it was easy, then it really wouldn’t be much of a sacrifice, would it? It’s just that… I didn’t think it would be this hard.

If you really think about it, Facebook is just a mindless time waster. Don’t hate, come on, you know it is. Taking care of a virtual farm? Looking at pictures of people you haven’t seen in 10+ years? Obsessing over whether you should accept a friend request from your high school boyfriend (maybe that one was just me)? Trying to beat your high score in brick breaking or bejeweled? A virtual Mafia?

All these things sound a little stupid (at least to me), now that I’ve written them down. So, why is everyone doing it then? Why am I sitting here having funeral for the Facebook application that I deleted from my iPod touch?

The answer is I. Don’t. Know.

This is what I do know. In the time that I haven’t been on FB, I have: gotten beat by a Cheetah in Lucky Ducks, made Thai Peanut Chicken for supper (which is delish, but let me know if you’re going to make it because there are a few changes which make the recipe much better!), watched The Imagination Movers (I kind of want to stab those guys), volunteered to make cookies for the Strong Kids Auction at the YMCA, put one of my children in timeout 3 times in 1 hour, and I have taken the trash out.

So, what would you do without Facebook?

P.S. When I took the trash out, instead of putting it in the dumpster, I put it where my husband parks his car in the garage. I wonder if this technique will work?

Ah yes, the great time waster. Facebook (or crackbook, as we like to call it) is one of the most useless, addicting, not-neccessary things on my computer. But, I love it. I need it. My coffee just wouldn't taste the same without it. Sigh. All the power to you, they say it does get easier, hugs!

First off- the trash technique is totally something I would do, and I bet anything it works. Good for you for giving up facebook. I go through addiction periods. I am currently "over" facebook, but give it a few weeks and it will start letting it waste my time again. Hope your little Lainey gets better soon.

Aw, I hope Lainey feels better soon! Dude, facebook is a ridiculous time waster! I try to make it a point to only get on if I'm extremely bored!

Giving up facebook for lent is such a great idea!! It is such a time waster for sure, good luck!

The heart shaped pizza was from Papa Romanos and in my defense, it wasn't that big, lol!;)

Is the trash bag tall enough that it will not fit under the front of my car? Sorry for the bad day....hopefully we can have a fun date tonight and you will feel better.

Day 3...how's it going???

As far as Lent, Phil and I always try to "add" something in addition to/instead of giving something up. This year, I commit to doing a quiet, devotional time BEFORE even turning my computer on for the day. So, if it takes me a while to get to my devotions, I can't go to FB or your blog. I've made it three days. :)

Thai Peanut Chicken: I've actually made that exact recipe (from Kraft), and it was a bit runny. What are your adaptations?

Facebook is so overrated. I think so many people get caught up living a virtual life that they forget to live their real one!

Oh my gosh, this cracks me up. I'm a recent Facebook addict, but I'm majorly addicted. Why do I care if someone I haven't seen in 15 years is having a crappy day? I don't know, but I do! Got to love it. I'm now addicted to Twitter too. :) I wonder how I manage to get anything done...

Love the trash comment! Glad to know someone else likes the hubby to take out the trash and gets "creative" when they don't. Poor Lainy, Croup is no fun, my son had it a couple times when he was under a year. When it doubt take her outside at night, the cold air and all helps. I remember the barking seal cough, so not fun.
Hang in there you can live without facebook, just blog more:)

Facebook is definitely a time waster... you are so brilliant to fast from facebook this lent. I should have thought of that too. Happy weekend Tami! xoxo

Boy, I know exactly what you mean with the facebook thing. I can't believe how much time it sucks from my otherwise productive days! On top of that, now I've discovered this wonderful blogosphere, and a whole new time-sucker is introduced!! Sigh!

BTW, let us know if the trash technique worked!!

Some people I know IRL need to ease off the FB. I rarely update. I just read other people stuff. BUt it's usually the same people over & over. I talk ugly about it, but find myself on it more & more.

I was bummed that you decided to leave FB for lent. I couldn't comment on my blog about the guy I had one date with and I wanted to email it to you on FB - but now I have to wait 40 days...give me your email!

I totally agree that facebook can be a massive time waster, oh but how EASY it is to keep in touch with everyone now (yes, maybe too easy and impersonal), but how I love it so! Although, when I was away on vacation for 2 weeks, I loved not being on facebook.
Good luck on your quest to give up it up! :)

I love your list of status updates at the beginning of your blog! I think that you should start each of your blogs during lent with a list of status updates!

Sorry about your Lucky Ducks loss to the Cheetah...it happens.

I have given up FB for Blogger. I can't deal with 2 major time sucks in my life.

I hope your kiddo feels better soon.

I'm Jewish, so I don't "do" Lent, but if I did, giving up Blogger would make me far more productive. I do Facebook, but I'm not one of those Farmville freaks/Mafia people. It is good to help me stay in touch w/ friends and stay on top of what's going on w/ them, but I'm not on there all day...

Keep us posted! And hope the croup goes away soon!

WOW - you are good. Not sure I could do it. I don't do all that farmville stuff, but I do like my fan page. Love talkin to my peeps.

Clever trash technique and I hate facebook!!! For all of the games and virtual nonsense you mentioned and for so much more!

Come over to twitter Tams! It's much more sophisticated;)
