My fear of white.

I have a huge confession to make.

When we were on spring break, I told Shawn I just had to have a new purse.  It wasn’t just any purse either, what I had to have was a new Coach purse.  I didn’t have anything particular in mind, but I wanted something that would go with almost everything.

When I got to the store I went round and round several times.  I couldn’t decide.  I was almost going to settle on a black one, but black doesn’t scream spring and summer at all.  So, I went the complete opposite route, and got a white one.

If you think that’s the confession, you’re wrong.  The confession is this:  When I took these photos it was the first time I had even taken the purse out of the bag!  Yes, this is horrible, I know.  I do have good reason though, trust me.

The very night I got the purse, Shawn was all “Come on, put your stuff in it!  Aren’t you going to use it?”  I thought about it, and then told him I wanted him to spray it with leather protector when we got home.  But, then we got home, and I looked at the care instructions which explicitly said “Do not spray purse with leather protector.”  Hmm…okay.

This is when I started getting nervous.  This is when I started regretting the white purse.  Honestly, it’s not just the purse, I have an overall fear of wearing or having anything white.  I would love love love a pair of white jeans, but I have never owned a pair.  I can’t, I just can’t.  Why?  Well, because of something that happened in high school.

Even though I didn’t see it happen, I remember this very vividly because I remember feeling horrible for this girl.  It was the spring of my senior year.  I was waiting for my boyfriend after school, and when I saw him he had this big smile on his face like he had something great to tell me.  So, he comes running up to me and says:

“You’re not going to believe what happened in English class!  Lucille got her period all over her white jeans!  Hahaha, Lucy Lucy with the red pussy!”

Ohmyword.  Is that every girls worst nightmare or what?  Now, clearly I don’t think I’m going to get my period on my white purse.  However, I do have visions of my children spraying ketchup on it, or manhandling it with chocolaty fingers.

So, I really need your help…how can I get over this?  I feel like I’m nanoseconds away from Shawn accusing me of wasting money on a purse that I won’t even use.  While that is true, his argument wouldn’t be that strong, since his sound bar didn’t even fit in our entertainment center!

I'm sorry I can't help you with your issue, I am right there with you. I yearn for a white purse to go with my spring pastels and bright summer colors. But I cling to my black Coach and black and brown Brighton because I am afraid of the stains.

I don't know if I could carry a white purse either. I wear white all the time & even have a pair of white dress pants.
Wanna know something funny though? I love getting new shoes, but have a weird thing about actually wearing them outside. I like them to stay new. I hate it when the bottoms get dirty.

Ooohhhh I carry my white purse here and there. I carry it everywhere. I will not eat green eggs and ham, I will not eat them Sam I Am!

I know that I could not do a white purse. Speaking of purses getting dirty...I was at the subway station today and set my purse on the bench to dig for my phone and low and behold- there was puke inches away from it. Blah!

Just keep it on your arm is my only advice!

The sound bar didn't fit?!? Oh my word.

And that poor girl in your high school. That must have been terrible.

Honestly, I am afraid of white too. The purse looks beautiful, but I would be afraid to actually use it as well. I would be paranoid.

The only white I wear is white t-shirts. The come 5 to a pack so if I get one dirty or stain it I don't care.

I have a white-button down shirt... I am afraid to wear it. Especially around Hayden... or in connection with food. But I have to eat. Right?

Good luck with the purse!

I totally almost had a panic attack reading your blog. Our senior year the same thing happened to me as Lucy, so I was so sure you were going to call me on it. As far as I know, Tara was the only one that noticed before I had time to ditch school and take the rest of the day off, and she had sworn to never tell a soul.

BTW- my jeans were not exactly white, they were just a VERY light denim color.

I wish I had reassuring and good news for you where this white leather purse was concerned, but I don't:( My sis-in-law also bought a SUPER CUTE white leather Coach purse which your not supposed to spray with leather protector. The first time she carried it, she was wearing a purple shirt and wouldn't you know at the end of the day she looked at the back of her brand new coach bag and wondered why it looked lavender on one side??? The dye from her shirt transferred to the white leather and WOULD NOT come out! She contacted Coach and they told her there was nothing that could be done about this as it was now stained permanently. You would think for the $$$ she paid they would have done something about this but apparently they have a Carry-at-your-own-risk policy or something when it comes to stains on the leather:(

Moral of the story she doesn't EVER carry this bag because of the HORRID stain and she can't sell it because no one would want it! my advice to you: If you already have such a phobia of this white purse and have never actually carried it list it on ebay and buy a new darker one with your winnings. I have sold several bags on ebay and done REALLY well! GOOD LUCK!!!

Hmm, if you hadn't already bought it, I would say go with a darker color. But it's yours now. So I say carry it don't worry. Coach sells a leather cleaner (but I'm sure you could find a cheaper one at Target) so you can always clean off the everyday dirt and grime that builds up. I would be careful as the commenter above said about carrying it with new clothes - especially dark jeans. Those dyes won't come out of anything. But barring that, I think you're fine. Enjoy your new bag!

1. That story about Lucille makes me want to cry. The last thing that girl needed was to have her period in white jeans! She was teased everyday regardless of incidences like that. We were all total jerks in high school, I hope she's okay.

2. Isn't a sound bar suppose to sit directly under your TV on top of your entertainment center?

3. I wish I could give you words of encouragement about the bag, but I would be too nervous myself. If the tags are on it and it's still in the packaging, can't you just exchange it to the Coach in GR?

I LOVE that purse. Buck up and keep/use it. I bet your world (and your wardrobe) will expand before your very eyes!
Now, 2 very important questions that you can answer privately:
1. Who was your senior year boyfriend; and
2. Who is "Lucille"?
Can't wait for answers!

My husband got me a new pair of shoes for Xmas and I've been terrified to take them out of the box. I wore them to a wedding this weekend though and my right foot sank into the mud and the shoe was completely covered! It washed off, but I can totally relate to how you feel! As for the white pants, I would hope that by this age we have a better idea of when NOT to wear them. You should go for it!

Amy Lynn said...

I think you should use it anyway, whats the worst that happens? It gets a bad stain and you have to buy a new purse? That doesn't sound like a bad idea :) hehehe. I totally know what you are saying though. I'm like that sometimes with white/light pants. I refuse to wear them near "that time". My best friend in high school used to have this one pair of black and white hawaiian print shorts, and EVERY time she wore them, she got her period. We finally made an executive decision to destroy them.

I have a fear of all things white, too. Not because of the creative rhyme, but because I inevitably get it dirty. Either myself, or my kiddos.

It's a super cute purse and you only live once. Go for it.

TILTE said...

cover it in plastic protector, like my grandma's couch.

Can't help you here. I am terrified of white.

I remember that you mentioned this on my blog...hopefully you get through your fear on the other side!

I'm thinking that if you just use it for all its white glory and it does get dirty, you can go to the hubs and say that you loved that bag so much and look how much you used it and it needs replacing and oh please, could you...well, he'll have to say yes. So then replace it, but not with white.

Voila! Or something.

Oh, Lucille. I actually remember that story. She was in Hillary and my class, so how did your boyfriend observe it? I want to know the answer to Heidi's question as well. :)

Use the purse. What's the worst that could happen? Ha! :)

You could be dead tomorrow... use the purse.

Plus Coach Bags look better worn.

With that said, I also have a White Coach purse and I think I used it twice!

I tend to use brown in the summer to go with my brown sandals!

I am deathly afraid of white, too. And that story just made me cringe - I still think about the pants I wear when I have my period - usually, it's always jeans!

I say you just jump in and take the purse out for a spin!!!

It's gorgeous. Wear it, love it, own it. Just don't wear it with dark jeans. My white Coach tote turned light blue on the back. I just kept that side turned in and carried in anyway (I was all prepared with a response to questions that had something to do with doing it on purpose and ombre).

I can't do white either...I'm too scared to even try. And the period part, worst nightmare ever!!!

a: I had a white purse and it got gross fast, but it wasn't that high quality
b: can you call coach to see if there is something you can put on it?
c: it is super cute so you better use it!
d: if you don't use it, return it and buy green

I say, use some sort of leather protector (surely there is something?), swap it for a different colour OR sell it on ebay :)
It IS a cute purse tho!

Uhhhh. That's pretty much one of my Domestic Goddess secrets: Never buy anything white. I'm a slob. Can't go there. It's a beautiful purse though.

Thanks for stopping by my blog via Ian's Daily Dose. I'm your newest follower.

My entire wardrobe is black or chocolate brown. Personally I'd opt for a black purse, but that's just me. That story about poor Lucy makes me sick. That truly is every girl's nightmare :(

omg but it is soooo pretty!! I have a white leather purse that I just LOVE. It goes with everything!!

It is gorgeous and I totally wanna borrow it. But I can't have a white purse. Between my kids, my dog, and my husband and whatever else, it would be destined for a dirty fate.

But whenever I see someone else carrying one I'm so jealous---I love it. JUST DO IT!

Unknown said...

I love the bag & I can totally understand your fear!

MrsDixon said...

Now, THIS is what I call real life problems. I too have a fear of white....all things white really, except my dog. I would return the purse and get the black one...or go with a pretty camel colored Coach purse-safest bet.

Okay that purse is super cute. It looks so bright and fun and CLEAN! You can keep it clean. You can do it! Just always wash you and your girls hands!

wish i could help friend. but i'm probably more afraid of white than you are. already considering selling my GORGEOUS giraffe print rug because i'm afraid the white part will get dirty and i'll have a meltdown. haha! good luck! :)

Coach has this amazing leather cleaner. I've never owned one of their white purse but a friend of mine did. We went in there one day to look at something, one of the salesgirls commented on her purse when she replied back that it was dirty, they cleaned it for her! It looked SO much better. I now use it on my sneakers.

Kellie said...

I don't wear white pants because I feel eerily similar to a refrigerator in them.

As far as the purse goes- the more you think about it , the harder it will be. Use it today! Right now! To go buy ice cream or a special treat and show-off the bag like you're a hot celeb!
