You might be a redneck if…

It all started innocently on Memorial Day weekend when the temperatures were in the 90’s. We were driving to my parents house to pick up the girls when the following conversation occurred:

Me: “I think I’m going to get one of those redneck pools.”

Shawn: “No.”

Me: “What?”

Shawn: “No. I said No.”

Me: “What do you mean No?”

Shawn: “I mean NO. We’re not getting one.”

Me: “You can’t tell me No. I’ll just go to the store and get one myself!”

Shawn: “Go ahead, but I’m not helping you take care of it!”

(We’re very mature, in case you couldn’t tell.)

And with that, it was on. It was on like Donkey Kong. When we got to my parents house I was ready to stoop to an all time low. I got out the Sunday ads and started looking at the pools. I found the one I wanted at Target, and then I took the ad and showed it to my Dad.

Me: “Hey Dad, look at this! I’m going to get one of these pools.”

My Dad: “Oh yeah? I bet the girls would really like that!”

Me: “Yes, they would! But, guess what? Shawn says if I get one, he isn’t going to help me take care of it.”

Oh yeah, I said it. I told my Dad on him. All the while, Shawn was glaring at me. But, he knew it was over. He knew I had won. That pool was as good as mine. On Friday afternoon the girls and I set out to get our pool, all by ourselves, just like I said I would. The only hiccup came when I was afraid we’d have to put a fence around it. However, lucky for us, this redneck town does not have ANY rules regarding pools.

Saturday afternoon we set it up, which was not as easy as they make it sound. Then we started filling it, which took hours and hours and hours. We finally turned the hose off on Saturday night, and started filling it again in the morning. When it was finally finished, Shawn put the chemicals in, tested the water, and hooked the filter up. I’m telling you, he looked really excited doing it! I told him I thought that pool had given him a new purpose in life, and he should be thanking me!

Anyway, wouldn’t you know it, when the pool was finally ready the temperature had dropped into the 60’s and was windy. That didn’t matter though, because when I suggested the girls take a swim, they were all over it! But, would you believe Shawn wanted to be the first one in? It’s true! Check it out (and make sure your volume is up, so you can hear Lainey at the end):

(If the video won’t load, try refreshing the entire page.)

For some reason, the video got cut off at the end, which is terrible because the look of desperation on Shawn’s face when he was yelling at me for a towel is just priceless!

P.S. Don’t tell Shawn, but I wasn’t even serious about the pool when I first brought it up. But, he had to go and tell me “No,” and when he told me “No,” I suddenly wanted that pool as bad as Barack Obama wants universal healthcare.

LOL @ your Barack comment.

Girl, you should see some of the pools around here- you don't have a redneck pool.

LOL I'm the same way...god help you if you tell me NO, I can't do something! xD You go girl!!

Claire said...

Yep, they just shouldn't say no to something you want! Hope the weather warms up so it's not so painful! haha

Not sure I would call that a redneck pool, where I come from, people swim in tarp-lined truck boxes!

P.S. I'm not one of them. *ahem*

Now you just need to build a deck around it and the redneck transition will be complete.

(Your husband's face when he climbs into that cold water is priceless!)

hahaha! I love the video...I also love your evil laugh at him squirming in the pool. You rock :)

Congrats on the pool... I love that you only got it out of "spite." Don't tell a girl "no"!

So cute :) I loved you "I like your tan" comment!

And your pool doesn't look redneck. I grew up in Southeast Tennessee ... I've seen a lot of redneck pools.

That video was amazing, Shawn looked like he was in so much pain, but all I could do was laugh, and then laugh harder when you were laughing.

This also made me very thankful for our 82 degree, heated pool...which I can't use for 4-6 weeks now, grrrr!

Oh, and I think that vacuuming our pool is almost therapeutic for D.B. he's out there all of the time. Maybe Shawn can get in on that, he might need some therapy after this video goes viral!

We had one when I was pregnant with my son.

The one requirement was that Clint keep it clean since I wasn't supposed to mess with the chemicals. That lasted till Hurricane Rita. I finally drained it and got rid of it the following March when the baby took a nap because it hadn't been cleaned in 6 months.

Oh my gosh that's hilarious! When you said Redneck pool I was picturing a little kiddie pool with a lawn chair in it! That one isn't TOO bad... I'm glad you talked Shawn into doing some of the work! And I'm REALLY glad you got this all on video :)

Girl, you should see my redneck pool! I love Shawn's cold commenrs & that little dance he's doing! And Lainey...that's so worth the $49.95 you paid for that pool!

you have me cracking up over hear...all alone in my dining room! love it!

You may never have more children after Shawn's little dance. That was GREAT!

Our pool is hovering between 92 and 94 degrees these days. It's like a warm bath...and a home to algae. It's hard to keep it clean in such heat, so be thankful for occasional cool days.

Just like Hillary said with DB, Phil is out there vacuuming it like it's his therapy. That will be Shawn's favorite toy before long. :)

I totally would have been ALL over that pool too if my hubby had said no. That being said, I am super impressed that you set it up. I would have purchased it and whined until Mike set it up for me.

The video is priceless, my friend. Your family is ridiculously adorable.

You are the best and I love that stubborn side of you. I'm like that. Tell me no, and it's on. I'm doing it for sure!

Somehow, when Z tells me "no", it makes me want whatever it is that much more. Ha! Yay for the pool!

Sazzle said...

LMAO!!! It is so mean of me to be laughing this hard at your husband -- poor guy looked like he was going to have a panic attack! :)

I am cracking up at your hubs. But I'm so glad you had the ballz to go get the pool. And whatevs--that is NOT a redneck pool!

Ok, I am incredibly jealous of your plastic pond...yours is real fancy...thats what I get for going to Wall Mart insted of Target, dang it.

Amanda M. said...

OMG, that is so NOT redneck compared to what I have seen the past few days in Kentucky.

Did he actually say it felt like Lake Superior? HA! That's what Lake MI feels like on the WI side!

Jenny @ Practically Perfect... said...

Oh my word - TEARS were rolling down my face as I watched that video! That was so funny! Thank you for capturing that and sharing it with the world, ha ha!

Ian said...

Redneck pool LMAO!!!!!!! How long does something like that take to blow up?

Heidi said...

By far, the hardest I've laughed at your blog. Between Shawn yelling, "It hurts" to "get a towel, hurry!" it's almost too much.
And may I just ask why you, the pool-instigator, was BEHIND the camera?

I cant view it on my iPad so I will come back. We had an Easyset pool and it was great. Last year we bought a permanent above ground pool and built a deck. This is much better.

Since I live in mn and youmlive in Michigan, I hope you got a solar cover! It makes a difference. Although emily still swam even if her lips were blue!!!!!

haha, I know the feeling. Didn't want it that bad, but when you tell me I can't, I'll kick your mother to get it.

So fun! Your husband's reaction is so funny!

Terrific video. Real life is so funny.
I know what that is like to react to 'no' or in my case to being told what to do.

I'm back.

OMG! Love it! That is exactly what we had! It is so freaking cold. I was glad to get my period just to have an excuse not to go in!!!

What a great guy for going in though. Tyler and I wouldn't go in when we first got it, but Emily did and she turned BLUE!!!

Now we have a heater with the new pool and let's just say, Mommy Likey.

OMG- that is hilarious! Shaun is a weeny :) I love how you do things purely to prove a point.

Kelsey Claire said...

That is hilarious. When are husbands going to learn that it is just easier to say okay. I mean I say I want things all the time, but I generally won't go out and buy it. If TJ tells me no it just makes me want it even more!

LWLH said...

Lol...I love that you got it just to spite him! :)

And in the video, your laughing and don't lie it might have been a little bit that his boys were shriveling up in that water and you were capturing it all on video..lol :)
