Another day, another need for a helmet.

As promised, the story of yesterdays stitches shenanigan.  Before I start though, not one person guessed which child needed the stitches.  Did you all just assume it was Alivia?

I’m trying to decide if I need to give background information to my new readers on how and why Alivia shouldn’t be allowed out of the house without a helmet. No, make that out bed.  No, wait a minute…let’s just say this child should potentially be wearing a helmet 24/7.  I’m not being mean here, I’m just being honest.

To make a long story short, in March alone I was called to her school twice for head related injuries.  The first time for her flipping backwards off a swing and landing on a patch of ice, and the second time for her snorting an earring up her nose.  Yes, you heard me.  She snorted an earring.  If you want to read about all that hilarity, click here first and then here.  I promise you won’t be disappointed with either of those posts!

Anydrama.  I got up at 7am yesterday to make it to spin class.  Had I slept in like I truly wanted to, none of this would have happened.  I guess it just doesn’t pay to look good naked.  I blame my husband.  I’m not sure why, but I do.

So, spin class is over and this Kidzone teacher frantically comes in looking for me.  She’s all “We’ve been paging you overhead!”  And in my head, I’m all “Well, that was stupid.  There’s no speaker in the spin room and had you looked at the sign in sheet you would have found my location to be SPIN ROOM!”  Duh.  I later found out from Alivia that she had to tell them where I was after they couldn’t find me.  Ugh.

Ok, moving on with the story.  For reals.  The teacher is all “blah blah blah, Alivia fell off her chair and has a bloody nose.”  No kidding.  Why am I not surprised by this?  Well, because on her spring report card her teacher listed her only goal for the next semester as “Alivia has a problem falling off her chair, she really needs to work on this.”  Seriously, that’s on her permanent record!

Long story short.  She was a bloody mess, and after I looked at it, I realized the cut went about 1/2 inch up into her nose.  Her two front teeth also got knocked very loose.  I figured the teeth could wait because she already has a dentist appointment scheduled for Wednesday.  But, I was pretty sure the nose thing needed stitches.

Again, longish story short.  I ended up taking her into work because there was a plastic surgeon working today.  After a lot of hemming and hawing, he decided it definitely needed to be stitched up inside her nose.  He agreed to do it, but we couldn’t give her any sedation because she had eaten.  I think everyone at work thought I was crazy, but after 3 unsuccessful attempts to inject numbing medicine, I decided to wrap her up like a cocoon and hold her down while he numbed it.  Hey, it worked, and I’ve already held her down like this for 4 other procedures, so what’s #5?

Approximately .5 seconds after he was done she was all smiles like nothing happened!

I told her she could pick someplace for lunch, and she chose Wendy’s, which was awesome because their kid’s meals are $1.99 right now and I got one of their amazing new Apple Pecan Chicken Salads!  Yummy!

After Wendy’s we went to Cookies by Design and got a bunch of yummy cookies to take to my co-workers for all their help!

Cookies

(do you think there will be one left for me tomorrow?)

I’m also going to get the surgeon a gift card to Bonefish Grille, because he saved me a $50 co-pay to the ER (and possibly hours of my life waiting in the ER)!  As my boss says, “sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know.”

So there, you have it.  The story of how my day went to hell in a hand basket.  And to think, that still wasn’t “the worst day of my life!”  Shhh…don’t tell Shawn though, because I’m going to milk this drama filled day for everything it’s worth.  Go ahead, ask me how many times he’s held down this accident prone child of ours.

That Alivia! She sounds like a handful! I love the note on the report card. That is absolutely hilarious! she needs to work on not falling off her chair!

Poor thing. It does sound like she is a trooper though!

Wow thats crazy. I thought I was bad when I was growing up but I have nothing on Alivia.

Glad she is all better tho.. That was pretty irresponsible of those daycare teachers to not even check the class list. That would be the 1st place I would look before even doing an announcement.

Yummy! I love the apple pecan salad.

Oh wow! Alivia sounds like my Peanut! She always has bruises and scrapes all over her and we can't figure out where they come from. How great is it that you could take her to work so you didn't have to wait in the ER!? That is so awesome. The perks of being a nurse! I am glad that she is ok. Hopefully she is not in too much pain.

Alivia is just like my little Aiyana, who is just like me...lol.

But, my goodness she is a tough little cookie. With Aiyana I would have had tears for days after the stitches!

Poor girl, your going to have to put her in a bubble soon.

OMG. She doesn't look any worse for the wear, though.

Well, since this wasn't an automotive related incident, I am sure this was not the worst day of your husband's life. ;)

Okay, that is seriously awesome about the plastic surgeon fixing her cute little nose right up. Do you think if you and I became friends IRL, you could like run me over to your work to the plastic surgeous one day for a real quick and free boobie lift? 'Cause my girls are so in need.

She would get along great with katelyn. Katelyn is ALWAYS hurting herself!

When Jenna was 10, the 2nd day of the 5th grade, she decided to sniff a magnet up her nose during a science experiment! After being called by the teacher, who is a close friend of mine, and speaking with the school nurse about her bleeding nose that wouldn't stop we decided we should go pick her up. On the way home she finally told us what she did and $480 later for xrays and small surgical tool digging up in her nose..a small watch type battery was found. Damn kids!

Oh and my son totally does the falling out of the chair thing...even at the dinner table...

So when you are making her Senior Poster for granduation, you totally need to blow up that report card about her needing to working on not falling off of her chair! Poor kid.

Hey, 2 things:

1. Thank you SO MUCH for doing an outstanding FGF!!!! I bow to you.

2. Are you getting the Lainey doll at American Girl? Every single time I walk by that store I think of you!

Hmmm, mayube it's the thrill of getting to choose where to get lunch and special cookies after an injury that is luring her to remain accident prone? I'm just sayin'.

I'm a teacher and though I don't teach elementary kids, I know for sure that would be a comment I would write if I had a kid who couldn't stay in her chair. And I know people would be appalled, not slightly amused as you are. I'd like more parents like you! My teachers never wrote about my chair issues but if they had, it could have been that I should have learned to sit still, not sit upon my feet, not change my position every two seconds, NOT tip the chair forward and the list could go on.

Oh my goodness, poor Alivia! She needs to be in bubble wrap! :)

It's a good thing you're buttering up the people you work with and the surgeon, because with that girl, who knows when you'll need them again! LOL! I LOVE Bonefish Grille, and those cookies look amazing.

I love that you have a sense of humor about these things.

Ok. PLEASE tell me that the falling out of her chair bit is really on her report card. Because that just might be the best thing I've heard all week.

And her smiles after stitches? She's totally going to grow up to be a super hero. Or a cop. Seriously, she's a riot.

Ow! Poor thing! And yep - can totally relate to having to wrap kids up and hold them down while they're being numbed! I'm glad that the plastic surgeon was able to do it for you guys!

Oh my word, I'm glad she's ok!!! What an experience!! It's totally who you know!! Those cookies look amazing, no way will there be any left when you go back!

You are my kinda girl Tami! When Jackson was in the NICU I consistantly brought the nurses homemade brownies and starbucks. Never hurts to grease those who are taking care of your babes;)

Poor Alivia! Glad she wasn't too upset about getting stitches. My first experience with them (WHEN I WAS 23!!!) makes me look like a complete wuss next to her! Hysterical that the falling off the chair thing is on her PERMENANT RECORD!!!

HILARIOUS!!

Unknown said...

omg! she is a trooper and so are you! having to hold her down? whoa. but it's true once the numbing stuff is in there, you're golden. do the stitches dissolve?

you are so right---it's who you know. one of the perks of being married to a doctor, like when i tore off the tip of my finger last week. lol!

Tracie said...

I think I know the answer to that question! I can't believe she's so accident prone! Do you think she'll outgrow it?

MrsDixon said...

Oh my gosh! Poor Alivia! She is such a doll, even with her bloody nose stiches! THIS is my first worst fear of motherhood....bloody accidents involiving teeth, or blood and the ER.

Good Lord those had to be the most painful stitches ever! I'm such a baby. There's no way that I'd be smiling in a picture that consists of a nostril shot and nothing more!
