Ask and you shall receive!

I never thought when I posted the factoid about my lack of uvula, that you people would be so intrigued by it!  Who knew?  I have to wonder what thoughts are swirling around in your heads about the reasoning behind my not having a uvula.  Was I born without one?  Did I have it surgically removed?  Did it fall off?  Luckily, it didn’t fall off, because that would just be weird.

Before I go any further, someone requested a picture.  I honestly didn’t want to take a picture because frankly, it’s just plain gross.  But, I did want to prove to you that I wasn’t lying, so here we go:

DSC_0360

(Kindly ignore my super old fillings…what can I say, I ate a lot of candy as a child!)

My throat is a little blurry, but I think you get the picture.  No tonsils, no uvula, no nothing!  See, I wasn’t lying!

Now, where did it go?  I wish I had a better story, but the truth is…when I had my tonsils out in 1st grade, the surgeon accidentally took the uvula too.  Oddly enough, when I worked in the hospital a few years ago, I worked with an LPN who used to be his surgical tech.  When I told her about my uvula, she said “Oh yeah, that happened quite a bit when he was first starting out.”  Good to know.

Undoubtedly, someone will ask me if my parents sued the doctor, and the answer is no.  I really don’t even think they thought about it.  He was upfront and told them what happened and my Mom says the only thing she really remembers about the conversation was him saying “Well, the good news is, she’ll never snore!”

Did I answer everything?  Oh wait, one more thing…the uvula is not to be confused with the vulva.  I guess it sort of looks and sounds like the same word, but trust me!  It’s not!

So, am I the only person you know without a uvula?

How do you take that out by accident?!

You're definitely not the only one. My mom had a "uvula-ectomy" a few years ago to help with her breathing and snoring... and it worked!

I can't believe a dr. took it out by mistake. I hope you know I'm telling this story at work tomorrow. All the speech geeks will be fascinated.

Huh...who woulda thought. I have to say though, you have amazingly perfectly straight teeth. Guess I didn't realize that when we met.

Oh, and just because I got a job for sure does not mean we can not go to Birch Run. I won't be starting full time for a few weeks. She is being really nice and easing me into working 40 hours since it has been a long time. But get this, I will be working 4 tens, so I get one day off every week, and I think that day will be Fridays, so we can for sure do a Birch Run trip.

Did you know that I don't really have a Uvula? They think that I had such huge tonsils for so long that there was never space for one to grow!

I did think it was super weird that you didn't have a uvula - I am glad you explained yourself.

And you are definitely the only person I know (to my knowledge) that doesn't have a uvula.

Crazy.
On a side note, I have a co-worker who once announced to a group of people that her vulva hurt, pointing at her throat. I laughed hysterically and then had to explain, to the group, why I found her annoucement to be so amusing. Apparantley I'm the only one who passed health.

Woah! i missed your original post but how do you accidentally take one out?! And if it happened quite a bit when he was first starting out, wouldn't he have learned after the first time it happened?!?

I wonder how many people confuse uvula with vulva. Imagine us asking for a picture of your lack of vulva!!

Can't get over the fact that he just wiped out everything in there and no one was upset. Can you imagine having to tell this to the parents????

You have fantabulous teeth.

How crazy. How is that an accident? For real! Well I mean if you never really had it you won't really miss it right?

I thought it was just something they take out when they take out your tonsils. I didn't realize it really had any importance. I'm so glad you blog, you have such great stories!!

You are definitely the only person I know without a uvula. That is so weird the dr took it out. Sounds like you weren't the only one girl.

You are the only person I know without a uvula. SO what exactly is the function of it anyways? Is it like the appendix. Just there to annoy you? LOL! Great picture by the way. I can't imagine that my mouth would look so pretty.

Yep, pretty sure you're a rare bird in that regard!

As a parent, I would have been absolutely livid at that mistake! I know it's nothing you really needed, but what a FOOL for slicing and dicing where he ought not have!

Thank you for clarifying that it wasn't your "vulva" because I tend to read fast and that's the first thing I thought you were referring to...ugh!!!

I can't believe the surgeon accidentally removed it!!!!

You're definitely the only one, though I'm hoping to add my husband to the list if it will stop the snoring. Stay tuned...

Having both my uvula & vulva intact-this is crazy! How in the he'll did he accidentally snip it!? Lol thank god he doesn't do circumcisions I guess!

So you must tell me this. And I mean this in the least sexually related way. Do u have any form of gag reflex? This boggles me!

I honestly can't say that I've ever heard of this. But, I'm guessing it's possible because you're still here, right?!
