Feel Good Friday: Bucket Fillers?

MyLogo2010copy

As most of you know my daughters go to a Catholic school.  Every year they have some sort of a theme for the year, for example, last year’s was “I Make a Difference!”  I can’t remember what the theme was the year before, but this year’s theme is “Bucket Fillers.”

Bucket Fillers?  Yes, bucket fillers.  I thought this was some sort of a made up shenanigan, but apparently it’s an actual program for schools.  I found out it was a program when the girls told me they had an assembly on Tuesday where a lady came and spoke to them.  “A lady?  What lady?” I asked.  “A lady from Bucket Fillers for Life,” Alivia informed me (with a “like, duh” tone in her voice).  To which I may have replied “Bahahaha!”  I mean, come on, Bucket Fillers for Life?  Shenanigans.  Oh, and when I laughed, I was informed that I was being a “Bucket Dipper.”  Is that a bad thing?

From the Bucket Fillers for Life website:

“We all carry an invisible bucket. This bucket contains our feelings. When our bucket is full, we feel great; when it’s empty, we feel empty. A bucketfiller is someone who says or does nice things for other people. By doing this, they are filling other people’s buckets and filling their own bucket at the same time. On the other hand, a bucketdipper says or does things to cause other people to feel bad. This simple but profound philosophy applies to every aspect of life.”

Interesting.  Well, all except for the part where Alivia called me a “dipper.”  Onto my point.  I did have a point, right?  Yes!  Bucket Filling is catching on in our house.  Last night Alivia wanted us all to write something positive down about each family member, and then she read them aloud.  By doing this, we would be filling each other’s buckets.  Here are the ones I received:

“To Mom, I love you.”  (from Lainey)

(I love you too Lainey Bug!)

“To Mom, I think you are very fancy!”  (from Alivia)

(Damn straight, thanks for noticing!)

“Mom, I like your shirt.”  (from Lainey)

(Do you still like it after I spilled a big glob of cheese on it right where my nipple is during supper?)

“Tami, thank you for changing the light bulb above the table.”  (from Shawn)

(You’re welcome, but next time do it yourself, that is not woman’s work!)

All of these things make me feel very good this week!!  So, were you a bucket filler or a bucket dipper this week?  Did anyone fill your bucket?

P.S.  Can I put a request in for my bucket to be filled with Margarita or Sangria next week?  I don’t think it’s too much to ask.

All my life, I've been a filler, while others dip mine. Dang.

Aw, that's so cute! I'm totally with you on the bucket 'o margaritas - we should meet halfway between New Zealand and Michigan in Hawaii and drink a few buckets' worth, ha ha!

I'd say that I was mostly a bucket filler, but a bit of a dipper. It happens!

They talked about that at my daughter's school last year, she loved it. When her little sister would grate her nerves, Hayley would tell her that Ryan had emptied her bucket. Lol. This week been rough, but mostly filled!

I've been kind of dippy this week. (PMS) I agree that someone needs to fill my bucket with margaritas.

I LOVE the book that this is based on! All the schools around here do it too :) I think it is an excellent way for the kids to understand it! :)

I think this is such a sweet lesson for kids to learn. (Would be a great lesson for some adults I know, too!) I was a bucket filler this morning - I brought pumpkin cream cheese muffins to share with the office. (Guess I filled out some asses along with the buckets with that one. Ha!)

I love the idea of filling buckets with margaritas. Now THAT would make you feel good! :)

Have a great weekend!

Fill your bucket with dirty martinis and fancy cheeses.

So I've never actually heard of this Bucket Filling before, but I love how quickly A drank the Kool-Aid in that Bucket and was spouting out calling you a dipper in no time. Also love that later she called you fancy.

I think that every thursday (or whenever) your family should fill each other's buckets and then you post the responses. Fun times.

For real, it sounds like a great program for kids, one which I wish my brother could have attended as a kid:)

Oh, and thank you for always filling my bucket.

My sister must have gone through that program YEARS ago because we've had that phrase in our family for as long as I can remember: "You just filled my bucket" or "My bucket is running on empty"...you get the idea.

Who comes up with this stuff?

This reminds me of that George Clooney movie he did with Anna Kendrick. He was some corporate guy who flew all of the time. On the side he did speaking gigs. OK I am rambling.

This post is fantastic and what a great idea for schools and people.

Tami I think you are freakin hilarious and you need a laptop in your bucket. I need a Coach Bag in my bucket. Because if I have a Coach bag I don't care how many dippers rip on me!

Have a wonderful weekend!!!

Oh and our stove light has been out for 3 months. The lightbulbs are kept in the workroom in our basement where the mice live. OK - they visited there once 2 years ago and I still will not go in that room! Tyler and I are having a tug of war about it because he thinks I should go down there and I am like, NO WAY! So no light for my stove :-(

I would love to fill your bucket (that just sounds way too dirty!) with an award! I have one over at my blog for you, I love your blog and think you're awesome - come on, bask in it!!

This is such a cute idea. They need this at my kids' school for sure. I think that I have done a little of both this week. It has been a rough one, but it will be all better tomorrow when I can drown my crappy week in a whole ton of beer!

I love that concept. I'm a bucket filler...most of the time. I can't help it that some people are just stupid and basically force me to be a dipper. Haven't heard much about the riding lately. Everything still going well with your bike?

It's gonna be really hard to promote a bucket filling school when the very person in charge just goes around emptying buckets because she can.

I try to be a filler for the most part but I sometimes can dip....in some weird way I feel dirty for saying that.

Bucket filling/dipping. Never heard of it. Neat concept though. Definitely something to keep in mind.

So funny you posted this because my mentor teacher just read the bucket filler book to her first graders a few weeks ago.

I love this idea! So cute. You are fancy!

I was a total "bucket dipper" but I did it behind their buckets, so I think I'm okay.

I like the margarita or sangria idea!!!

My daughter is more of the "I fillith thy bucket and then I take it away" type. As in, "Mommy, I love you but please don't get out of the car when you drop me off at school."

We're pretty much even-steven around here.

My second graders learned about this last year and I thought it was great! It is so easy for them to understand and think about their actions.

PS - I love the Margarita/Sangria idea. That should be the reward for being a bucket filler all week. :)

This is excellent. Unfortunatly I'm probalby both every now and then...but I would obviusly strive to be a "filler". I found you on Sexy Sunday follow. I'm following- check out my blog sometime. Thanx

I love that the school is doing this. Such a positvie message to teach kids how to be good to each other.

I mean, did you see that dad on the today show this morning that went after his daughters' bullies on the bus??? All I kept thinking was, "good for you, sir!"

I mean, yes, a grown man going after 3 boys (BOYS!) for bullying his daughter was wrong, but wow, they should teach kids early on how hurtful they're actions can be.

LOVE the Bucket fillers!
