Iron Goddess.

A few people have asked me why in the world I wanted my pimpin’ new bike, so I figured I might as well come out with it. I wanted the bike because I want to start doing duatholons. A duathlon is similar to a triathlon, except there is no swimming. A duathlon is run, bike, run. Whereas, a triathlon is swim, bike, run.

I am going to be completely honest with you here. I am usually all talk and no action…or at least all training, but no racing. Can anyone relate to that? I started training last summer for a 1/2 marathon, but then when the boob thing happened, I gave up. I told you I was going to run the Riverbank Run last weekend, but when my friend bailed out on me, I said screw it.

So, what I am about to say is HUGE! On June 27 I will be doing the Iron Goddess Duathlon!

Yup, I signed up and everything! It’s important to note that I signed up, because the other races I have ditched, I never even signed up. Don’t judge, ok? However, if I’m being honest, I already want to give up on this race too. I know, I know, I’m a total weenie.

It rained here all last week, so Saturday when it was sunny I was finally ready to take my bike for a spin.

You have no idea how much I hate that helmet, but it does make me look sort of hardcore. I decided to ride to Alivia’s T-Ball game, which was 8 miles away. I’m not going to lie, I was terrified. It was ridiculously windy, and I was fighting the wind the whole way, not to mention riding on a road with lots of cars! It didn’t help that about 2 miles in, Shawn and the girls drove by me in his car. His car! What does that mean? Well, it meant that I’d have to ride the bike home too, which I was not planning on. Boo! I think that was all part of Shawn’s master plan to get me to stop being such a weenie.

In the end, I did it. I rode 16 miles round trip, without falling off once! Shawn was really proud of me, and kept telling me how super fast I was. Whatever. I guess I did ok, but the idea of the duathlon is now making me throw up in my mouth. The race is this: 1.5 mile run, 10.7 mile bike ride, and 3 mile run. Shoot me now. I’m not looking for sympathy or encouragement here, I’m just being honest.

The race is 6 weeks from today, so I hope that gives me enough time. If I’m not ready, I think I’ll just break my own leg a few days before. Don’t tell Shawn though, okay?

P.S. I added a “Train with me” page at the top of my blog. This is more for my benefit to track my progress, but feel free to check it out and ride my ass if I’m not working hard enough!

This is really cheesy of me to say, but it's appropriate: you go, girl!

I can't wait to tell dh that you are doing this. B/c he told me that there is no such thing. He wanted me to try to train with him for a triathalon, but I am NOT a swimmer. I mean, I'm not going to drown, but that's about all I can say about my swimming.

I can't even count how many races I have said I'd do and then backed out on. No judgement coming from me!!

I think it's awesome that you're doing this! I'd love to try one one day, but I don't have the funds for a bike right now. Plus I'd probably seriously injure myself in the process since I haven't ridden a bike since I was like 7.

I wish you luck, and I look forward to all the fun stories that are sure to follow!! :)

Ha! I am the total opposite, all racing with no training. I do not recommend this strategy at all though.

Super excited for you and can't wait to hear how it goes! And...glad to see you in a helmet, if you didn't have one, I would make you listen to ER horror stories until you caved and bought one.

I love your honesty. At least you are willing to sign up and train. I am not a runner so even signing up for a half marathon is out of the question.
You do look hardcore on that bike and that's a big accomplishment that you didn't fall off, woo hoo!

I'm very impressed! We'll all be here cheering you on!

You go girl - you got this!! You'll do awesome! You rocked your bike the first time you took it out - I think you're thinking it's going to be harder than it is.

Thanks for the encouragement, I am totally checking out the couch to 5K plan, thanks for the tip! So, if you finish this, then I guess I need to follow through with mine, too, huh?!

That is awesome! IMPRESSIVE!

Well...I finished Baby Proof! I loved it! I'm SO happy she ended up with Ben. However, I didn't really like how they got a divorce RIGHT away in the beginning. I mean come on...every married couple has differences. Why not try to work them out? I also wish they didn't get back together so quick at the end.

What are your thoughts?

There's not even a flash of doubt in me that you'll do this thing, and you'll do it in style!

You look like a hardcore biker in that pic! The Iron Goddess sounds awesome and you can totally do it. I completely understand the fear of biking though. I rode my bike down a driveway and screamed bloody murder because I was so scared - so I give you mad props for riding 16 on actual streets!

I'm so proud of you! I have a gut feeling you are going to finish this race!!!You are one tough cookie!
Hey, I'm going to try and call you over the next day or so and fill you in on things.

I like the idea of a duathlon! I just need a nicer bike...

Training for my first half kicked my tail for the first 3/4 of the training but now I'm hooked. You CAN do it :)

Good for you! It's great that Shawn is so encouraging.I would have been pissed about him taking the car too, but he did it for you!!! And I'm sure you are much prouder to say that you biked 16 miles, instead of 8 :)

You look so cute in your gear! I'm so impressed! I didn't even know duathlons existed. I know you can do it. Pretty soon you're going to be a pro!

Okay, I have to admit that I chuckled when I read that your husband drove past in HIS car and that you had to bike home. It's kinda funny!

It is so cool that you're doing the Iron Goddess. I've never done one, but they sound exciting and when it's over, you'll feel so good about yourself. Yay for you!
